Five questions you need to ask about wood floors

Whether you?re looking for wood floors, laminate, tile or other flooring in Calgary, there?s only one place to go:? West Valley Carpets & Flooring.

They are beautiful, adding warmth and elegance to your home.? We want you to have the best customer experience possible, so always ask these questions before you purchase.

  1. Are there two kinds of hardwood?? Yes, you can get either a solid or engineered wood.? Both floors are genuine timber and both will add value to your home. The only difference is the construction.? While solid is one complete slab throughout the plank, engineered consists of a slab at the top, with at least three layers of hardwood and other materials, underneath. That results in a wood floor that won?t move around to adjust to the weather.? Since it can handle water and moisture better, it can be installed in basements and other areas where solid cannot.

  2. Is wood expensive as a flooring material? No, not when you consider that it rarely needs to be replaced and will never go out of style. It often looks better with age and adds value to your home, meaning that 70% to 80% of your investment will be reflected in your property values, whether it?s solid or engineered.

  3. Are they hard to take care of?? No, but like anything, the better you take care of it, the longer it will last.? Vacuum regularly and employ some common-sense rules, such as wiping spills immediately avoiding scratching the floors when moving furniture so use protective furniture pads.?

  4. Is the flooring noisy? Fabrics absorb noise.? If a room has only hard surfaces, such as wood, there will be echoes and vibrations that will bother some people (while others don?t even notice). It?s an easy fix; just layer some scatter rugs on the floor.

  5. What are the undertones that I hear so much about? They are secondary colors mixed in with the base, so floors may have a red, orange, gray, blue, cream, etc. tint.? They are important because once you figure them out, you can accessorize walls, upholstery, and accessories to bring them out and make the room sparkle.
